Cdr S.G. Thomson, CD

Assistant Canadian Forces Naval Attaché (A/CNA)

Born in Scotland, Commander Stewart (Stew) Thomson was raised in Peterborough, Ontario before joining the Canadian Navy in 1974. After completing initial training, he specialized in ship borne air control and weapons direction in Her Majesty’s Canadian Ships HURON, PRESERVER, SAGUENAY and OTTAWA. He later served as Combat Officer in HMC Ships PRESERVER and SAGUENAY. In 1994, he joined the staff of the Commander, Combined/Joint Task Group 120.1 engaged in Operation Forward Action, the UN sponsored embargo of Haiti.

His early shore appointments included serving as the Tactical Trainer Officer at the Canadian Forces Maritime Warfare Centre in Halifax, Trials Officer in Lauzon, Quebec for the construction of HMC Ships REGINA, CALGARY and VILLE DE QUEBEC, and Scheduler for Canada’s Atlantic Fleet.

Commander Thomson served 4 years in the Headquarters of NATO’s Commander-in-Chief Eastern Atlantic, in Northwood England, where he was the Staff Officer responsible for the Standing Naval Force Atlantic. On completion, he received a commendation for his efforts from the Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic.

Returning to Canada, he entered the world of Personnel Management in National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, first as a Career Manager then as an Occupation Manager. Commander Thomson assumed the duties of Assistant Canadian Forces Naval Attaché, Washington, in August 2008.

Commander Thomson is married to the former Beverly Halverson of Halifax, Nova Scotia. They are the proud parents of a daughter, Laurie, and a son, Adam, both of whom currently reside in Ottawa, Ontario.
